Obsidian Plugin
Get citation recommendations as you write in Obsidian.
Requires Obsidian v1.0 or later (desktop)
What it does
- • Sidebar panel — recommendations appear in a side panel inside Obsidian
- • Cursor context — automatically extracts the text around your cursor as the query
- • Cloud-connected — searches your personal InCite library, no local setup needed
- • One-click insert — add citations directly into your document at the cursor
- • Evidence paragraphs — shows the most relevant passage from each recommended paper

Download the zip file

Open your vault's plugins folder
Navigate to
.obsidian/plugins/inside your vault folder. Create thepluginsdirectory if it doesn't exist. -

Create a folder and extract
Create a folder called
inciteinsideplugins/and extract the zip contents into it -

Enable the plugin
Restart Obsidian, then go to Settings → Community Plugins and enable inCite
Setup

Open plugin settings
Go to Settings → Community Plugins → inCite (gear icon)

Set API mode to Cloud
Select "Cloud (inciteref.com)" from the API mode dropdown

Enter your API token
Log in and generate a token on your account page, then paste it into the token field

Test the connection
Click "Test" to verify everything works
Usage
Get recommendations
Place your cursor in a paragraph or select text, then press Cmd+Shift+C (or run "Get citation recommendations" from the command palette).
Insert citations
Click a recommendation in the sidebar to insert a citation at your cursor. You can customize the citation format in settings.
Auto-detection
Enable auto-detection in settings to trigger recommendations automatically when you type a citation marker.
